COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Soto Leads the Titans to Soccer Title

Eddie Soto scored two goals--for the second consecutive game--to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 3-1 victory over Vermont in the title game of the Reebok/Smith and Barney Invitational Sunday in Burlington, Vt.
Tom Helmer broke a 1-1 tie with two minutes remaining and Soto added his second goal a minute later. Soto, who also scored two in a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire on Friday, was named the offensive most valuable player. Goalkeeper Mike Kornock, the defensive MVP, had four saves for the 15th-ranked Titans (4-1-1). Vermont is 4-2-1. New Hampshire beat Stanford, 3-0, in the tournament’s other game Sunday.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
UC Irvine 3, Cal State Northridge 2--Bret Cowan, Jon Szczuca and P.J. Palowski scored in a two-minute span late in the second half to give the visiting Anteaters a 3-0 lead. Northridge (3-2) then got close with two late goals.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:
Pepperdine 9, UC Irvine 7--Jack Kocur’s two-point goal with 3:19 left gave the sixth-ranked Waves (3-3) a three-goal lead. UC Irvine’s Peter Muller scored with 1:37 left to make it 9-7.
The seventh-ranked Anteaters (2-4) had cut the Waves’ lead from 7-4 to 7-6 before Kocur’s two-pointer.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Joselyn Robins had nine kills for Hawaii (6-1, 2-0), which won, 15-7, 15-7, 15-13, late Saturday night in Maui. Brandy Smerko had seven kills for the Anteaters (1-8, 0-2).
