RACING ROUNDUP : Mr Purple Hits the Gate, Finishes Third

Evansville Slew pulled away in the stretch for a 1 3/4-length victory over Valid Wager in the $200,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington International Racecourse on Sunday.

Favored Mr Purple, winner of the Hollywood Juvenile Championship, hit the side of the starting gate and never fully recovered. He finished third.

Evansville Slew covered one mile in 1:37 4/5 and paid $6.60, $4.00 and $2.80. Valid Wager paid $6.20 and $3.80 and Mr Purple, 3 1/2 lengths back in third, returned $2.40.

Odds-on favorite Diplomatic Jet, ridden by Jerry Bailey, scored a 12-length victory in the $75,000-added Pilgrim Stakes for 2-year-olds on turf at Belmont Park.

Diplomatic covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:46 4/5 over the soft course and returned $3.80 and $2.60. Houston Connection paid $3.00. There was no show wagering.

In the filly division, Upper Noosh scored a five-length victory, upsetting Another Legend in the $75,000-added Miss Grillo Stakes.
