AMD to Stop Making 486 Chips With Disputed Code: Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. agreed that AMD will stop making the microprocessors containing the software but may continue to sell most of the existing chips. The agreement partly settles one of several legal disputes between the computer chip firms. They struck the bargain after U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Trumbull in San Jose refused Intel’s request to order AMD not to sell any 486 chips with the disputed in-circuit emulation, or “ICE,” code. Trumbull had ruled last week that AMD violated copyright laws when it included the code in its Am486 microprocessors. The agreement will allow AMD to sell existing 486 microprocessors in which the code is disabled until Jan. 15.
