This is the Golden West League’s inaugural season. Saddleback and Tustin arrive from the Sea View League and Ocean View, Santa Ana, Rosary and Westminster move over from the Sunset League. Ocean View, last season’s Sunset League champion, and Tustin (third in the Sea View League) were the new league’s only teams to reach the playoffs last season. Ocean View (23-5 overall, 12-2 in league) finished the regular season ranked sixth in the Orange County sportswriters’ poll. The Seahawks reached the Southern Section Division II-AA semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Woodbridge, 49-38. Tustin (17-10, 9-5) lost to Hacienda Heights Wilson in the first round of the Division II-A playoffs, 68-55. Two Ocean View seniors, Farrah Magee (12.7 points per game), and Dustine Yamamoto, plus Westminster’s Lisa Tamamasui and Rosary’s Jennifer Chey were first-team, All-Sunset League selections. Yamamoto’s .787 free-throw percentage ranked her third in Orange County. Chey, who averaged 16.3 points, was fourth in the county with a .736 free-throw percentage. Tustin’s Sarah Davis and Katie Scheuerman were first-team All-Sea View League selections. Davis averaged 12.3 points and 9.4 rebounds and was the Bolsa Grande tournament’s MVP. Scheuerman, who averaged 14 points, was also an all-league selection in 1992-93. Westminster (10-15, 5-9) finished fourth in the Sunset League last season, and Saddleback (4-18, 0-14 in Sea View League play) and Santa Ana (11-15, 3-11 in Sunset League play) each finished eighth in their respective leagues.
