A Near-Smokeless Cigarette?: R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. has developed a near-smokeless cigarette that the company hopes tastes better than a similar product launched six years ago that flopped. The Eclipse produces little secondary smoke because it does not burn tobacco, although it does have as much nicotine as most cigarettes. Analysts said Eclipse could be a breakthrough product for RJR because it reduces secondary smoke and may help reduce incidence of cancer among smokers. However, RJR is keeping tight-lipped about the success of its marketing tests.
