OUTLOOK
Watson has three starters back from last season’s team. Chen and Simpson will be at the guard positions and Kimble at forward, but positioning will not really matter if the Cougars play the up-tempo style they would like. The biggest hurdle for Watson is assembling a full team for practices so the starters can scrimmage against some bodies. Watson and his aides have been forced to run against the players in practice, which is good for keeping the former New Jersey Net player in shape, but it does not help in evaluating newcomers. Kimble needs no evaluation, he’s the go-to, rebound and go-to again guy for Claremont. Last season, he averaged 22.8 points and 9.7 rebounds while playing alongside Gavin Watson, the other Cougar all-league player. Together, they kept Claremont in just about every game. This season, Kimble will have to do it alone or hope Chen and Simpson can pick up some of the scoring load. If the latter happens, Claremont could improve on last season’s record.
