GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Beats Lakewood to Advance

Mandy Clayton, Andree Verhulst and Melissa Schutz each scored 10 points as Newport Harbor defeated Lakewood, 56-33, Thursday in the semifinals of the Cypress tournament.
Newport Harbor, sixth-ranked in The Times Orange County preseason poll, plays Costa Mesa in tonight’s final. Schutz also had nine rebounds for the Sailors (6-0).
In the other semifinal:
Costa Mesa 61, Harbor City Narbonne 46--Koo Kim scored 21 points and Corri Lurmann added 15 for Costa Mesa (6-2), which 34-18 at the half.
In consolation games of the Bolsa Grande Classic:
Laguna Hills 44, South Torrance 29--Tamara Inoue had 20 points, five assists and eight steals and Tayyiba Haneef added eight points to lead Laguna Hills (5-1).
Magnolia 64, Bolsa Grande 22--Michelle Tuazon had 13 points, including three three-point baskets, and Andrea Picchi had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Magnolia (6-1). Lien Mai scored 10 points for Bolsa Grande (2-4).
In pool play of the El Dorado Co-ed Classic:
Downey 67, Sunny Hills 16--Angela Gonzalez scored 10 points for Sunny Hills (0-9).
Corona 50, Valencia 28--Jamie Snavely scored nine points for Valencia (2-5).
In the first round of the Orange Lutheran tournament:
Century 55, Connelly 31--Addy Alexander scored 12 points and Nina Alexander added eight points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead Century (4-1).
Whittier Christian 53, Liberty Christian 22--Alana Kempton had 14 points to lead Whittier Christian (5-2), which led 18-2 after the first quarter.
In first round of the Valley Christian tournament:
Los Alamitos 49, Bellflower 44--Brooke Donberg had 13 points and Allison Fulp added 12 points and 13 rebounds for Los Alamitos (3-3).
In nonleague games:
Edison 73, El Toro 33--Marie Philman scored 27 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had eight steals for Edison (4-2), which led, 29-19, at the half.
Fountain Valley 47, Cerritos 40--Jennifer Ludwicki scored 12 points to lead Fountain Valley (5-2).
Fullerton 42, El Modena 35--Nadia Hoerner had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Fullerton (4-4).
La Habra 47, Los Altos 38--Brooke Koehler scored 14 points and Jo Berchtold added 11 points for host La Habra (3-2).
Loara 48, Anaheim 23--Paola Flores had 18 points and six assist to lead Loara (3-3).
