Man Crossing Street Struck, Killed by Car

HUNTINGTON BEACH — A pedestrian was killed Christmas Eve when a suspected drunken driver careened through an intersection at high speed, police said.
A 22-year-old Huntington Beach man, whose name was not released Saturday night pending notification of his family, was struck and killed as he crossed Ellis Avenue at Delaware Street.
Sgt. Ed Deuel said the man was thrown more than 200 feet. The accident happened at 6:10 p.m.
Witnesses told police the driver, identified as Paul J. Gronley of Huntington Beach, ran a stop sign at 80 m.p.h., Deuel said. The speed limit at the intersection is 35 m.p.h.
Gronley, 41, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter and was being held in the city jail on $50,000 bail.
