Steps Firms Can Take Against Violence

Some things a company can do to help combat domestic violence, according to United HealthCare Corp.:
* Offer to help any employee who appears to be a victim of domestic abuse.
* Refer the employee to your company’s employee assistance program, or state or local domestic violence organizations.
* Remind the employee that domestic violence usually gets worse without outside intervention. Tell her or him that there are programs for victims, abusers and children who witness abuse.
* Sponsor a companywide campaign that includes a letter from the chief executive on the subject sent to employees’ homes; a brochure on domestic violence sent to every employee; domestic abuse training for company nurses, counselors and personnel staff; lunchtime seminars for employees; company newsletter articles about violence, and referrals on where to get help inside and outside the company.
