The oldest business in Laguna Beach is the Laguna Lumber Co., which opened on Forest Avenue in 1912 and moved to its current location in Laguna Canyon 20 years ago.
The business was started by Joseph Richard Jahraus, grandfather of the current proprietor, Joseph Richard Jahraus III. The family’s connections run deep here.
“It makes it a lot of fun when you know a lot of people in town,” said Jahraus, 46. “In fact, the other day a lady came in who was my nursery school teacher.”
Jahraus’ 10-year-old son, Bill, has also has a knack with lumber. He builds battleships out of wood scraps, Jahraus said.
