HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Wolssohn Gives Rio Mesa Upset

Josh Wolssohn scored on Rio Mesa’s sixth penalty shot after 80 minutes of regulation and 40 minutes of overtime as the visiting Spartans upset four-time Foothill League champion Burroughs, 1-0, Friday night in a Division II first-round soccer playoff match.
Following 120 minutes of full-field play, Rio Mesa (12-7-5) and Burroughs (14-4-7) tied a first round of penalty kicks with two goals apiece. Rio Mesa goalie Nick Pavlick then saved the first shot of a second shootout before Wolssohn got the game-winner.
Rio Mesa is in the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.
DIVISION I
Simi Valley 3, West Torrance 0--Sean Herrity and Brian Tande each had a goal and an assist as the host Pioneers (14-1-4) beat the Warriors (13-8-4).
Peninsula 1, Westlake 0--Westlake (12-6-5) dominated the first 20 minutes but could not stop Peninsula (23-3) from scoring at the 25-minute mark in the first half.
DIVISION II
Buena 2, Saugus 1--Defender Shepley Brohammer scored his first goal of the season in the 98th minute and the Bulldogs (13-7-4) upset the host Centurions (15-5-1).
San Marcos 4, Burbank 2--Rigo Iniguez scored twice in the second half but visiting Burbank (7-11-4) could not overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit.
DIVISION III
St. Francis 3, San Luis Obispo 2--Pete Vagenas scored from 10 yards in the 117th minute as the Golden Knights (18-3-1) outlasted visiting San Luis Obispo (10-8-3).
Pioneer 2, Palmdale 1--Miguel Narvaez scored the winning goal from 25 yards with 15 minutes remaining for the Titans (16-6-1). Murad Dibbini’s goal gave Palmdale (17-7-1) a 1-0 lead at halftime.
DIVISION IV
La Canada 4, Moorpark 0--Jason Cropley scored twice and goalie Matt Cardis had five saves as the host Spartans (20-0) beat the Musketeers (12-6-6).
Calabasas 4, Temple City 3--Adam Cooper scored two goals, including the game winner in the 119th minute, and added two assists for the visiting Coyotes (13-2-2), who came back from a 3-0 deficit.
DIVISION V
Village Christian 5, Bishop 1--Ignacio Brache scored early in the second half to tie the match, 1-1, and John Rotunno followed moments later with the go-ahead goal for the Crusaders (11-7-2) at Village Christian.
Oak Park 1, Crossroads 0--The Eagles’ Colin McDonnell took a pass from Tyler Blondi and scored on an indirect kick with five minutes remaining for host Oak Park (12-4).
CITY SECTION
Reseda 5, University 0--William Diaz scored his 24th and 25th goals for the Regents (20-2-5) at Reseda.
Jose Mejia added two goals for Reseda, which led, 2-0, at halftime.
Poly 2, El Camino Real 1--Rafael Cortez scored the winning goal 10 minutes into the second half at Poly.
Luis Mesta scored his 27th goal of the season on a breakaway early in the first half for the Parrots.
San Fernando 2, North Hollywood 1--Reuben Bolanos scored to tie the match 20 minutes into the second half and Ricardo Renteria scored the go-ahead goal for the Tigers (10-2-3) 10 minutes later at San Fernando.
