Canyon’s Bustos Ineligible for Start of Softball Season

Canyon High softball player, Crystl Bustos, The Times’ 1994 Player of the Year, will miss the first month of the season because of academic ineligibility, Coach Greg Hayes said.
Bustos, a shortstop, batted .573 with 10 home runs and 27 runs batted in last season.
“I took some advanced-level classes this semester and fell below the 2.0 (grade-point average) I needed to be eligible,” Bustos said.
Said Hayes: “This wasn’t a case of her slacking off. CIF eligibility requirements discourage kids from taking tougher classes. If she had any chance to get a Division I scholarship her school load needed to be increased. This was the best thing for her as a person.”
Track and Field
Dolores Tuimoloau, the 1994 State champion in the girls’ shotput for Channel Islands High, has been declared academically ineligible at Ventura College and will not compete for the Pirates this season.
Tuimoloau ranks seventh on the all-time state high school list in the shotput with a mark of 49 feet 2 inches.
Football
St. Genevieve High football Coach Jeff Trovatten was notified Friday that he will not return as coach because of “differences in philosophy,” Athletic Director John Yakel said.
Trovatten did not return phone calls.
Trovatten led the Valiants, who won the Santa Fe League title in 1993, to a 1-9 record in his only season as coach. Trovatten will remain a computer science teacher at the private school in Panorama City.
Yakel said the school will accept applications for the job until early March.
Jurisprudence
A pretrial hearing in San Bernardino County Superior Court for former Cal State Northridge football player Jonathan Beauregard was postponed Friday until March 3.
Beauregard has pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder and is free on $100,000 bail.
