MISSION VIEJO : College District Board Approves Budget Cuts

The Saddleback Community College District board has approved $2 million in budget cuts in anticipation of losses from the county’s collapsed investment pool.
The board voted 4 to 1 on Monday to approve the cuts, with Trustee Steven J. Frogue opposed. Trustee Teddi Lorch abstained and board President Marcia Milchiker was absent.
The district had approved a $69-million budget for the fiscal year ending June 30 and had $24 million in the county investment pool when it collapsed.
Lombardi told trustees that the district is bracing for a $2-million loss and would have to consider borrowing money if the loss was any greater.
Nearly half the recommended cuts were accomplished by leaving vacant positions unfilled at Saddleback College, Irvine Valley College and the district office.
The budget recommendations came out of a series of meetings at both of the district’s campuses where administrators, faculty and students considered how best to save money without hurting academic programs.
“The colleges feel comfortable about them,” said Robert A. Lombardi, the district’s chancellor.
