GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Lattin, Defense Spark Cougars

In a game between the top teams from the two local sections, Crenshaw High defeated Long Beach Poly, 52-35, in the first round of the Southern Regional Division I tournament Tuesday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Crenshaw, the City Section 4-A champion, was led by Kristi Lattin, who scored 20 points, including five three-point baskets, and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Poly (25-5), Southern Section Division I-AA champion, was held without a field goal for nearly eight minutes in the second half, during which time Crenshaw went on a 22-3 run.
Santa Ana Mater Dei 58, Washington 54--Melody Peterson grabbed an errant inbounds pass and scored a layup in the final six seconds to seal the top-seeded Monarchs’ Division I victory at the UC Irvine Bren Center.
Peterson scored all eight fourth-quarter points for Mater Dei (26-1), including two free throws with 1:55 remaining to break a 52-52 tie. The free throws came on Shay Williams’ fifth foul. Peterson finished with 23 points.
Ventura Buena 60, Poway 32--Buena (24-3) outscored Poway, 22-4, in the fourth quarter to seal a Division I victory at Poway (21-7).
Buena began the game with a 15-2 run.
Irvine Woodbridge 76, San Diego Scripps Ranch 45--Erin Stovall made 12-of-13 field-goal attempts, scoring 24 points to lead the Warriors (30-1) to a victory over Scripps Ranch (19-13) in a Division II game at Woodbridge.
Pasadena Muir 72, North Bakersfield 52--Tomisha Hughes scored 28 points to lead Muir (25-3) in a Division II game at North Bakersfield (22-7).
