Actor John Howard

I was saddened to read in The Times of the passing of actor John Howard (March 3). As a GI who had fought in Anzio, I was on a three-day pass after being discharged from the hospital, when I approached a Red Cross station for a doughnut and coffee. I had no money and was refused the request. John Howard was in line and said to them, “Can’t you see this man just got off front lines and is wearing a hospital pass?” He paid for the coffee and doughnut for me. I have never forgotten his generosity these past 50 fifty years. He was a very decent human being.
