Coach: Steve White (25th year).
1994: 22-1, 10-0 in the Freeway League. Won second consecutive Division II championship, defeating Palm Desert in final, 14-7.
Key returners: Tony Chan, No. 2 doubles, Sr.; Joseph Gilbert, No. 1 singles, reached quarterfinals of section individual tournament last year, ranked third in Southern California boys’ 16s, Jr.; John Han, No. 2 singles, Jr.; Shaun Harris, doubles, Jr.; Jeff Hartl, No. 1 doubles, Sr.; Davis Lee, No. 2 doubles, Sr.
Key newcomers: Chris Chung, No. 3 singles, So.; Joe Williamson, No. 1 doubles, Jr.
Outlook: The road to a third consecutive section title will be a little bumpier this season without Kevin Kim, the nation’s top-ranked player in the boys’ 18s. Kim left Sunny Hills in the fall for Palmer Tennis Academy in Florida. “What Kim would have given us is stability and sure points,” White said. “I could have experimented and done what I wanted. But now, a lot of young players are going to have to pull their own weight.” But don’t feel bad for the Lancers. “I don’t think we’ll be 22-0, but we’ll be good,” White said.
