Valley Storefront Multiservice Center For Seniors is seeking people to join three separate support groups being formed for cancer victims and their loved ones.
The first group is for those who are currently being treated for cancer, said Rena Snyder, a licensed clinical social worker for Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, which is sponsoring the groups.
It is designed to help cancer victims cope with treatment and deal with doctors and family members, she said. It will also help those with terminal illnesses come to terms with their own mortality.
The second group is for people who have completed treatment and are trying to cope with the aftereffects, she said.
Group members will be taught to cope with the anxiety they often feel when they are no longer being treated.
“When the treatment is finished, they feel that the cancer is going to return, that the treatment is not enough,” she said.
The third group, Snyder said, is a bereavement group for people who have lost loved ones to cancer.
“We already have a widow bereavement group, but this is going to be different,” she said. “It’s for family members, parents, best friends, sisters, brothers.”
Anyone seeking information is asked to call the Valley Storefront at (818) 984-1380. There is a fee charged for the support groups.
