PREP SOFTBALL 1995: PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : Ocean View
- Share via
Coach: John Sansone (third year).
1994: 17-7, 10-4 in the Sunset League. Lost in the first round of the Division I playoffs to Cerritos, 1-0.
Key returners: Sara Gulla, P/DH, So.; Lisa Messick, 2B/SS, Jr.; Lisa Parra, OF, Jr.; Kathy Ponce, P, Sr.; Tracy Wilkinson, 3B, Sr.
Key newcomers: Daniella Garcia, OF, Fr.; Louieanne Jung, SS, Fr.; Janina Miller, OF, Fr.; Cara Vanderhook, C/3B, Fr.; Jamie Wilson, C, Fr.
Outlook: The Seahawks weren’t dealt any breaks by the transfer of Angela Burke (.339) to Marina and Jennifer Hatcher’s (.333) decision to not play; both were all-league selections. Combined with the graduation of second baseman Janee Sansone (.365, Washington State) and catcher Racquel Willson (Irvine Valley), Ocean View has taken its lumps. But Ponce (17-5, 0.20 ERA, three no-hitters during the regular season) is back, and she can beat anyone; she had a county-high 187 strikeouts in 137 innings. She also batted .333. Wilkinson (.328), too, will be counted on for offense, though the Seahawks probably will win with pitching and defense.
