Youth Faces Manslaughter Charge

SYLMAR — A 16-year-old Sylmar High School student has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the shooting death of a 14-year-old classmate while they were skipping school last week, a prosecutor said Thursday.
The youth, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, faces a maximum of four years in custody if found guilty, Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Taklendar said.
The teen-ager was entertaining four friends at his parents’ Sylmar condominium during school hours March 10 when he pulled out a gun and playfully pointed it at Chris Mitchell, Taklendar said. Then he pulled the trigger, firing the gun, authorities said.
Chris was hit in the head and died at the scene.
The youth was expected to be arraigned today at Sylmar Juvenile Court.
