THE HABIT OF RIVERS: Reflections on Trout Streams and Fly Fishing by Ted Leeson (Penguin: $10.95; 178 pp.). Ted Leeson describes trout streams as, “fundamentally alike, yet endlessly variable, they offer the solace of the familiar and the inexhaustible fascination of a thing that can never fully be known.” He recounts his experiences as fisherman, discusses the ecology and politics of dam construction and wonders at his eagerness to cast artificial insects into streams that may not even contain any fish. With deceptively simple eloquence, Leeson uses his hobby to explore the complex relationship between man and nature.
