BUJUMBURA, Burundi — Fighting flared Saturday in the suburbs of Bujumbura, the Burundian capital, as Tutsi gangs attempted to clear the Hutu tribe out of the city.
Clashes broke out again at nightfall in the suburbs of Bwiza and Buyenzi, where eyewitnesses reported that up to 500 people, predominantly Hutu, were slaughtered Friday.
Tens of thousands of Hutus fled the two townships early Saturday. Officials at the Zairian border reported that between 40,000 and 50,000 had crossed into Zaire since Friday.
