Fireplace Ember Sets $135,000 Home Fire

ANAHEIM — A fire caused $135,000 in damage to a home Sunday when an ember blew from the fireplace onto a dry wood-shake shingle roof, fire officials said.
The fire spread into the attic of the home at 111 S. Sunkist Ave. and into rooms on the second story, Anaheim Fire Department Capt. Scott Roberts said.
An emergency call attempted to the Fire Department at 9:29 a.m. by a resident of the home was unsuccessful because a portable telephone did not work, he said. But a passing motorist stopped and telephoned 9-1-1 from his car phone, Roberts said.
Firefighters removed the home’s roof and extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.
