Actor Carroll O’Connor’s adult son killed himself Tuesday after holing up in his father’s Pacific Palisades home, Los Angeles police said.
Hugh O’Connor, 33, who had appeared with his father in the television show, “In the Heat of the Night,” was found dead in the hilltop home in the 200 block of Aderno Way about 4 p.m. He died of a gunshot wound, police said.
Special Weapons and Tactics Team officers had surrounded the house for about 3 1/2 hours before entering and finding O’Connor’s body. Police said Carroll O’Connor had called them saying that his son was despondent and that there were several guns inside the house.
The elder O’Connor is most famous for playing the Irish, blue-collar conservative Archie Bunker on the Norman Lear-produced television series, “All in the Family.” In recent years, the 71-year-old New York native has played a Southern sheriff in the series, “In the Heat of the Night.”
