Richardson broke down and cried shortly after receiving the U.S. Basketball Writers Assn. “Most Courageous Award,” during a Monday morning ceremony.
Richardson was presented the award by USA Today’s Steve Wieberg and then watched a 10-minute video presentation that traced his career and included message from President Clinton.
The video also chronicled the death of Richardson’s daughter, Yvonne, of leukemia.
After the video, Richardson stepped to the microphone and said the USBWA recognition was “the most prestigious award I’ve ever received.”
Then he broke down and left the podium.
