69 GOING ON 70

In his otherwise delightful profile of Samuel Goldwyn Jr. (“The Goldwyn Era,” March 26), Kenneth Turan makes a mistake I see often in the press. Goldwyn is 69, yet Turan writes “as he approaches his 70th year.” Goldwyn is approaching his 71st year. The day you turn 69 you begin your 70th year, just as when you turn 1 you begin your second, not your first.
Why do so many people, particularly journalists who should know better, get that wrong?
