NATO Jets Fly Over Sarajevo to Deter Serb Attacks

From Reuters

NATO warplanes flew over Sarajevo for the second day Monday as snipers launched new attacks, killing one person and wounding two.

The jet fighters screamed overhead in the evening as a deterrent to Serbian attacks that have hit the Bosnian capital every day since Friday.

“It does seem that the Bosnian Serbs are not looking for military targets and are in a cowardly fashion trying to harass the people of this city,” U.N. spokesman Alexander Ivanko said.

“I have to admit that yesterday (Sunday) the U.N. failed to deter an attack on the city,” he said.

Doctors at the city’s Kosevo Hospital said three people were killed Sunday, including a 15-year-old girl, and at least seven were wounded when 12 mortar rounds hit Sarajevo.

Bosnian Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic said the United Nations is failing to protect the capital.

“The indecisiveness of the U.N. encourages the aggressor, therefore the attacks on us are escalating. Safe areas in Bosnia are not safe. Sarajevo is not safe. We have innocent people being killed again,” Silajdzic said.

“The international community should respond immediately with air strikes according to the ultimatum for the protection of Sarajevo. We want the international community to take this seriously,” he told reporters.

Sarajevo was proclaimed a total exclusion zone in February, 1994, barring heavy weapons within a 12-mile radius of the city.
