Religious Right’s Role in Schools Addressed

Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Charles Weis will talk about the religious right and its role in public education during a speech tonight at a Ventura synagogue.
The topic of the workshop, sponsored by the Ventura County Pro-choice Coalition and Temple Beth Torah in Ventura, is “The Radical Right Agenda to Take Over Public Schools: National Strategies of Radical Right Groups and Concerns with our Local County School Board.”
Weis has openly criticized the county Board of Education, which sets policy for the county schools office run by him, for pushing what he says is a religious agenda.
Three of the board’s members, Wendy Larner, Angela N. Miller and Marty Bates, recently voted to suspend the use of Planned Parenthood and AIDS Care in sex education workshops.
The talk will start at 7:30 at Temple Beth Torah, 7620 Foothill Road.
