School Collections Go to Kobe Relief

A check for $36,236 from the Los Angeles Unified School District was presented to the Japan America Society of Southern California on Monday, as part of a relief effort for the victims of the Kobe earthquake.
Schools throughout the district, including many in the San Fernando Valley affected by the Northridge quake, collected the money to be put into a Kobe relief fund.
The fund was the result of a motion introduced in February by school board members Warren Furutani and Julie Korenstein.
Students, teachers and parent groups helped raise the money, which the Japan America Society will send to Kobe.
More than 5,000 people died in Kobe, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
