SANTA ANA — A Stanton man arrested early Sunday on suspicion of spousal abuse died as he was being booked into the Central Men’s Jail, possibly after suffering a heart attack, authorities said.
Javier Trejo, 43, collapsed and died about 3:40 a.m. as he was proceeding through the booking process, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Rex Hatch said. Trejo had been arrested in the 10500 block of Sylvan Street about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The cause of Trejo’s death will be determined during an autopsy, but Hatch said authorities believe he suffered a heart attack. The Orange County district attorney’s office will investigate the death, a routine procedure when a suspect dies while in law enforcement custody, Hatch said.
