Students Organized to Benefit Homeless

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful event, “America Sings.” There were 2,500 students from all over the country at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. Students from our little community of El Rio were among them. They danced in the sun, sang beautful chorale music and- most important-they brought hope to children without hope.
Besides having a wonderful time, these young people collected food, money, blankets, books and clothing for the Homeless Children Center in Long Beach. It required six truck to transport all that was collected. At tent was also set up in the park, where these students worked together and made 4,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to feed the hungry in the area.
These students deserve our recognition and support. They face so many pressures n their lives, form their peers, schools and just growing up. It isn’t easy learning to be a responsible adult. Knowing we have such a promising generation of young people, I feel much more confident of our future. GRETCHEN HARRELSON Oxnard
