TENNIS ROUNDUP : Thompson Defends Century League Title; Hol Also Advances

Ryan Thompson of Foothill easily defended his Century League singles title Monday to advance to the Southern Section boys’ tennis finals.
Thompson, whose record improved to 37-1, defeated Canyon’s Mark Hess, 6-1, 6-3, Joost Hol of Foothill, 6-3, 6-1, and Ryan Hollis of Villa Park, 6-2, 6-3.
Hol, a freshman, was the other player who advanced to the Southern Section finals after upsetting second-seeded Hollis, 7-5, 6-1, and winning his other match against Hess, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Chad Smith and B.K. Chang of Villa Park won all their matches to advance to the section finals as the No. 1 team.
Smith and Chang beat Foothill’s Rob Claus and Lance Stern, who will advance as the No. 2 team, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Jason Wang and Al Gomez of Orange, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and Pete Feovenyessy and Jeremy Kaye of El Modena, 6-2, 6-1.
In the first round of the Empire League finals:
Top-seeded players advance--Tunde Osunsanmi of El Dorado and Loara’s James Pai advanced to the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Osunsanmi defeated Century’s Hector Flores, 6-0, 6-1. Pai defeated Katella’s Joey Chuang, 6-0, 6-0, to advance.
In the first round of the South Coast League finals:
Top-seeded singles and doubles are perfect--Top-seeded Brett Hankey of Mater Dei swept his quarterfinals match, 6-0, 6-0. Dana Hills’ Erik Lundblad and Hanley Ernst, the top-seeded doubles team, also won, 6-0, 6-0.
In nonleague tennis:
San Diego Francis Parker 14, St. Margaret’s 4--Raphael Thurber swept at No. 1 singles for St. Margaret’s (8-6, 3-4), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
