Grunions Expected at Beaches This Week

Conditions are right for grunion to make an appearance, and a run is predicted this week.
The best times to watch the silvery fish burrow into the sand, mate, and then wash back into the sea are late at night, said Ranger Kelly McEnroe of the state Department of Parks and Recreation.
The tides will be right at 11:26 p.m. Tuesday, 12:18 a.m. Wednesday, 1:16 a.m. Thursday and 2:26 a.m. Friday. Each run is expected to last two hours.
The fish frequent Ventura County beaches including San Buenaventura State Beach and McGrath State Beach. McEnroe said the creatures like flat, sandy beaches, and that the debris from winter storms may get in their way.
