NCAA SOFTBALL : UCLA Won’t Host Regional

The UCLA women’s softball team, ranked No. 2, was stunned Sunday when the NCAA tournament committee did not name its newly renovated stadium one of eight regional sites.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Sharron Backus, UCLA co-coach. “It’s just really a shame that some credence isn’t given to how you finish up during the year.”
UCLA (43-6) will travel to Columbia, S.C., for the second consecutive season. In Friday’s first round, UCLA will play Campbell, N.C., (47-23) and Hawaii (45-10) will play South Carolina (53-19).
No. 7 Cal State Northridge (41-15) will play host to a regional including Cal State Fullerton (42-15), Illinois State (45-12) and Missouri (47-17).
The eight regional winners advance to the Women’s College World Series, May 25-29, at Oklahoma City.
