Sophomore Wins $1,500 Scholarship

Fountain Valley High School sophomore Tricia Michels has won a $1,500 scholarship in the Science, Business & Technology Category of the national Discover Card Tribute Scholarship Award Program.

The Assn. of California School Administrators co-sponsored the program with the American Assn. of School Administrators and Discover Card.

Award Recognizes Community Service

Irvine High School student Tin-Ming Hsu, 17, has been presented with an Asian Pacific Youth Leadership award.

She won a $1,000 college scholarship for community service. Hsu is a volunteer with the city’s Youth Action Team and the Orange County Human Relations Council. She also is a member of Students for Social Responsibility.

DAR Award Goes to Loara High Student

Loara High School senior Gloria Jin Lee has been chosen as a national Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen for dependability, patriotism, leadership and service.

Lee will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

8th-Grader Moves to Geography Finals

Lucas Nagy, an eighth-grader at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, has reached the state finals for the National Geography Bee.

If Nagy advances to the national competition May 30 and 31 in Washington, he will vie for the top prize: a $25,000 college scholarship.

Heritage Oaks School Gives Science Honors

Heritage Oak School in Fullerton awarded three students top honors during a recent science fair.

Seventh-grader Julie Henrick and sixth-grader Beth Nusbickel, both of Placentia, and sixth-grader Brieanna Coleman of Buena Park were first-place winners for their projects.

Julie analyzed how different cellophane gels affect plant growth. Beth demonstrated how ice cools a drink. Brieanna showed which conditions cause nails to rust the fastest.

Contest Winner to Go to Art Institute

Aliso Niguel High School senior Karen Madrid has been awarded a scholarship to the Art Institute of Southern California.

Madrid won for her entry in the “Color It Orange” competition. She was one of 11 winners chosen from more than 1,000 entries submitted by high school students.

Madrid will attend a pre-college program this summer at the Art Institute of Southern California.
