COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Wins Twice to Advance in State Softball Tournament

Debra Goddu and Jenny Lopez combined for a two-hit shutout to lead Cypress to a 4-0 victory over West Valley in the State softball tournament Saturday at Riverside College. Cypress plays Long Beach, top-seeded in the South Region, at noon today. Long Beach lost to Palomar, 2-0.
Goddu (18-3) pitched six innings and allowed only one base runner, Janna Marquez, who reached first on a single. Lopez closed the seventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Lopez also had two hits for the Chargers (50-9). Teammates Rockie Breig and Alison Murphy each had two hits.
Kristina Pike had the other hit for West Valley (35-5).
Cypress must beat Long Beach, then beat Palomar at 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m. to win the State title.
In other games:
Cypress 5, Sacramento 2--Lopez scored two runs and had two doubles and two runs batted in to lead Cypress (49-9) in an elimination game.
Starter Heidi Schmidt pitched six innings, giving up five hits and striking out four.
Sacramento (44-10) was eliminated.
Grizelda Lopez had two hits for Rancho Santiago (33-12), which was eliminated. Christina Mazurle, Kristi Bolle, Denee Taylor and Kristin Kirkwood also had hits for the Dons.
At the State track meet:
Holguin wins heptathlon--Monica Holguin of Fullerton won the heptathlon with 4,183 points and Cavetra Mitchell of Long Beach, a former Los Alamitos High standout, won the 100- and 200-meter races with times of 11.81 and 23.46. Long Beach won the men’s and women’s team titles. Saddleback was ninth in the men’s meet.
