Fashion Island in Newport Beach is one of Orange County’s most upscale retail and office complexes. It contains a shopping center along with several hotels and office towers.
But designers of the complex had much more ambitious plans when Newport Center was conceived in the 1960s.
The planners wanted a much larger development with several skyscrapers surrounded by a network of freeways.
Residents opposed the plan, however, and the freeways were dropped. Drawing the most fire was a proposal to convert Coast Highway into a freeway.
