Citing an increasing desire to spend more time with her family, Shannon Jakosky resigned as Newport Harbor girls’ basketball coach after six seasons.
“We’ve reached a point where it was important for me to spend more time at home,” Jakosky said.
Jakosky said the decision came as she and husband Jack--who was one of her assistants, along with O.J. Lipscombe and Sue Hogan--were doing their postseason evaluation.
“We enjoy what we do, but as weeks went on it became clear . . . it was not working out. August was the only time I could leave home,” said Jakosky, who has been monitoring the recovery from illness of her father--former Oregon State men’s coach Ralph Miller, who lives in Oregon.
“I will miss the day-to-day contact with the quality young athletes I worked with. And I will miss our staff and the opportunity to share the world of athletics because it meant so much to my life. I may coach an AAU team this spring, but I have to do something with less time commitment.”
Newport Harbor was 105-56 under Jakosky. The Sailors were 22-6 last season, and finished second in the Sea View League. They won the league title under Jakosky in 1993-94, and were runners-up in 1992-93.
Jakosky’s children are 4, 3 and 7 months. She also has a 17-year-old stepson.
