BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Braves Evacuate Smoke-Filled Plane

The Atlanta Braves evacuated their Montreal-bound plane Monday night after the cabin filled with smoke while on the runway at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. Hydraulic fluid leaked onto a hot duct, vaporized, then filtered into the cabin through the air conditioning system, officials said.
The passengers evacuated by inflatable emergency slides.

Cleveland Indian designated hitter Dave Winfield was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left shoulder. First baseman Herbert Perry was recalled from triple-A Buffalo. . . . The Kansas City Royals recalled first baseman Jeff Grotewold from triple-A Omaha.

Dennis Martinez’s son, Roger Maris’ grandson and Tom Glavine’s brother were among the 1,666 players taken in the baseball draft. Dennis Martinez Jr. was drafted by Cleveland, the current club of his father. Steven Maris was drafted by the Angels, and Mike Glavine was drafted by the Indians. The Dodgers drafted Antonio Mota, the son of Manny.
Of those drafted, 821 were pitchers (49 percent); 769 players (46 percent) were from high schools, 576 were from colleges (35 percent) and 310 from junior colleges (19 percent).
