A man suspected of stealing a car from an auto dealer lot Monday led officers on a high-speed chase until he crashed into a tree, police said.
About 2:40 a.m., a driver passing Steves Don Chevrolet in the 1000 block of East Whittier Boulevard called police after seeing a suspicious man driving away from a used car lot in a 1990 Acura Integra, Police Lt. Steve Costanzo said. Police officers saw the car at Euclid Street and Imperial Highway, and a chase that reached speeds of 70 m.p.h. began, Costanzo said.
The suspect sideswiped a van parked on the side of the road during the chase, then struck a tree at Harbor Boulevard and Ash Avenue in Fullerton, police said.
Jarret Veal, 23, was being held at La Habra City Jail on suspicion of auto theft, evading officers and hit and run, authorities said. Bail is set at $10,000.
No one was injured and police said they are continuing to investigate.
