Authorities on Monday identified the victim of a weekend shooting in Arleta as 17-year-old Alejandro Hernandez of Panorama City.
Hernandez, a junior at Monroe High School, was walking alone to meet friends to play basketball at a nearby park when he was gunned down Sunday evening by two men riding in a green Honda Accord, according to police and family. After shooting Hernandez at Chase Street and Canterbury Avenue, the gunmen drove over his body.
The drive-by shooting is believed to be gang-related, Los Angeles Police Detective Frank Bishop said. No suspects have been arrested.
Friends and family members described Hernandez as a youth who enjoyed playing football and basketball. They said he did not belong to a gang.
“He loved to joke around a lot,” said his friend, Javier Sanchez, 17, of Panorama City. “He was also about to become a father.”
According to Sanchez, Hernandez’s girlfriend is six months pregnant.
