Library Did Not Buy New Computers

* A statement in the July 5 Times could have serious consequences for our library system. Referring to patron-placed holds, the article said: “Library patrons can do it themselves using new computers that have been installed in Ventura County’s 15 branch libraries . . . “
In fact, the library did not purchase new computers. We installed software that allows patrons to place their own holds, without buying new equipment. Patron-placed holds allow reference staff to spend more time with patrons who need help.
This may seem like a petty point, but considering that the continued existence of seven libraries and two programs are on the line in county budget hearings, we would prefer not to have taxpayers assuming that we would rather have new computers instead of open libraries.
