The Angels on Thursday acquired left-handed starter Jim Abbott and reliever Tim Fortugno from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for four minor leaguers.

With the trade, Abbott returns to the team with which he made his major league debut in 1989. He was traded to the New York Yankees after the 1992 season.

Abbott, 27, was 6-4 in 17 starts with the White Sox this season with an earned-run average of 3.36. He had three complete games.

Abbott was selected by the Angels in the June free agent draft in 1988 but passed up pro ball to play for the U.S. Olympic team in Seoul. He signed in August of that year and in 1989 started his pro career at the major league level, with a 12-12 record.

Abbott played four seasons for the Angels, with his best year coming in 1991 when he was 18-11 with a 2.89 ERA to finish third in Cy Young Award balloting. He tossed a no-hitter in 1993 for the Yankees against Cleveland.
