SIMI VALLEY : Softball Team Seeks 3rd Win Over L.A.

A Simi Valley softball team is poised to take the field against a squad from South Central Los Angeles, hoping to extend its winning streak in the annual game to three in a row.
The squad is also hoping for a larger contingent of fans from Simi Valley to cheer them on at the game, scheduled for Aug. 19 at Jesse Owens County Park in Los Angeles.
The game, which alternates sites from year to year, began as an effort to heal tensions between the two communities following the 1992 riots. The South Central team won the maiden game that year.
Organizers were disappointed two years ago, however, when barely half a dozen Simi Valley residents went to South Central to watch the game.
“It was very embarrassing,” organizer Susan Davenport said. “I would really like to see a better turnout this year.”
The park is at 9637 S. Western Ave. at Century Boulevard, about a mile east of Hollywood Park. Events are scheduled to last from 10 a.m. to dusk. Information: (805) 522-4571.
