We’ve landed in the fat, lazy middle of the summer season, when culture takes a holiday and thoughts, with luck, are on things light and breezy. What better time for a pops concert?
That’s the bill for Friday’s performance at Moorpark College by the Moorpark Community Orchestra. Bring an appetite for ear-friendly repertoire, including music by Leonard Bernstein, waltz king Johann Strauss and jazz icon Duke Ellington.
There’s another subtext bubbling here, too. This modest orchestra, conducted by James J. Song, is made up of volunteer amateur musicians from the community.
Options for amateur musicians have grown increasingly rare locally in recent years.
The Conejo Symphony, once stocked with amateur musicians, has become more professionally oriented and, as of next season, exists only as a merging entity with the Ventura County Symphony in the New West Symphony.
But, what, us worry? Pops goes down easily and may be the right antidote for cultural transition anxieties.
