South Bay : MISSING GOLD
Los Angeles police are looking for a rainbow of clues they hope will lead to not one but six pots of stolen gold, silver and platinum.
More than $500,000 in those and other precious metals were recently stolen in transit from Anaheim to a Belgian jewelry manufacturer, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. The metals, weighing about 3,000 pounds, were packed in six 55-gallon drums that were last seen when they were sealed into a cargo container at an Anaheim shipping warehouse, said Detective Marc Zavala. The container was then trucked to a Terminal Island dock, loaded onto a freighter and shipped 5,000 miles to Belgium.
At some point during the journey, Zavala said, the security seal on the container was broken and the drums were removed. The theft was discovered late last month by cargo handlers in Belgium.
