Oxnard Firm Creates Barley Food for Dogs

Green Foods Corp. of Oxnard, manufacturer of powdered extracts made from whole food ingredients, has introduced a powdered barley grass product for dogs.
The supplement, Barley Dog, contains garlic to boost the animal’s immune system, chlorophyll--a natural anti-inflammatory--vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
Barley Dog has been picked up by the nationwide Petco chain and is expected to be available in its 230 stores by the end of August.
Green Foods’ line of powdered extracts is made from produce grown on 150 acres in Oxnard, and processed at a nearby 52,000-square-foot plant.
“This is our first product aimed specifically at pets,” said Green Foods spokesman Stephen Hartmann. “But because of the size of the pet food industry, because of the care with which people feed their animals, it makes sense for us to pursue this.”
Green Foods reported sales of $14 million for the 1994-1995 fiscal year.
