BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Reds’ Rijo Has Elbow Surgery

Cincinnati Red pitcher Jose Rijo had surgery to repair ligament damage in his right elbow.

The Reds did not immediately know how long Rijo will be sidelined. The rehabilitation period for reconstructive ligament surgery generally is nine months to a year.

Rijo, 30, has been hampered all season by pain from a bone formation in his elbow ligament.

The Baltimore Orioles are trying to raise $1 million to fight neuromuscular diseases by selling tickets to seats on the edge of the playing field for the game of Sept. 6, when shortstop Cal Ripken is due to break Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played.

Gehrig died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--now called Lou Gehrig’s disease--in 1941. The money will be used to set up a foundation for research at Johns Hopkins University.

The Milwaukee Brewers optioned right-handed reliever Michael Ignasiak to triple-A New Orleans. Joe Slusarski was promoted from New Orleans. . . . The New York Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Mariano Rivera from Columbus of the American Assn. and designated right-hander Dave Eiland for assignment.
