1995 PREP PREVIEW: BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY : Six Teams to Watch : Huntington Beach
- Share via
Coach: Eric Anderson (third year).
1994: Third in the Sunset League.
Key returners: Simon Bhavilai, Jr.; Dan Gaston, Jr.; Anthony Nguyen, Sr.; Jay Rivero, Sr; Tony Trueba, Jr.
Key newcomers: Jacob Childs, Jr; Jeremy Negrete, Sr; Jess Strutzel, Sr.
Outlook: Gaston and Trueba are the strongest 1-2 duo in the county. Gaston had the most productive summer of Anderson’s group, but Trueba has big-time credentials with a berth in the State cross-country meet last season leading the list. Trueba posted a personal best time of 14 minutes 50 seconds for three miles last season and 15:49 at the Southern Section Division II-A finals. On the strength of three area transfers--Strutzel (La Quinta), Childs (Fountain Valley) and Negrete (Marina)--the Oilers are looking good. Strutzel, fourth at the Garden Grove League finals as a junior, was a State meet finalist in the 800 meters in track, having run a personal best of 1:51.75. Childs finished 13th at last season’s Sunset League finals.
