COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Abdul-Jabbar Improving and May Play
- Share via
Karim Abdul-Jabbar is getting better. In the five days since he suffered a deep back bruise, the UCLA tailback has gone from a wheelchair to the sidelines to the practice huddle; from doubtful for Saturday’s game against Oregon to questionable to a 50-50 chance of playing.
Abdul-Jabbar, the former Sharmon Shah, ran from scrimmage for the first time since leaving the game against Brigham Young last Saturday and assessed his chances of playing as 50-50.

Fellow tailback Skip Hicks shared practice time with Abdul-Jabbar, but Coach Terry Donahue said it is unlikely that Hicks, who has missed a month while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, will play Saturday. “I’m not planning on Skip Hicks playing,” Donahue said.

With right guard Matt Soenksen out because of a concussion, Donahue will move right tackle Chad Overhauser over to fill Soenksen’s spot and use either senior Mike Rohme or junior Gene Waters in Overhauser’s position, . . . Defensive end Danjuan Magee suffered a partially torn ligament in his left knee in practice and will be out two to three weeks. Starting in his place will be Vae Tata.
