UCI Warns of Possible Asbestos Exposure

IRVINE — Participants in a U.S. Sports/Nike Tennis Camp in mid-July who used a recreation room known as the “Cave” in the Mesa Court student housing complex may have been exposed to asbestos, UC Irvine announced Monday.
Sprayed-on acoustical ceiling material containing a 5% concentration of asbestos was removed from the room during renovations the week of July 17. During the renovation, some participants in the tennis camp or other visitors may have entered the room to use vending machines, according to a bulletin from the university’s Environmental Health and Safety Office.
The university does not expect any adverse health effects from any exposure to the asbestos because the contact was brief, the bulletin stated.
